Wonder-Filled Wednesday No. 12: The Luna Moth

Free subscribers enjoy a 6-minute segment as I begin to lay down paint; supporting subscribers can view the entire replay.

Hi, friends!

That was so much fun! I love drawing and painting full-stop, but there is something magical about illustrating nature and nature journaling. Add the layer of these livestreams on top, and it’s absolute bliss. So thank you so much — you are what makes Wednesday my new favorite day of the week!

Livestream Notes

Drawing using the Puzzle Method (Time Stamp 02:20)

This recent post from Notes is a good walk through of this method. Noticing shapes of, and within, your subject helps get your brain out of trying to use symbolic representation (when you draw the generic version) instead of drawing what you actually see.

Adding ink to the drawing (Time Stamp 35:03)

I used a sepia 005 Micron pen to add some lines. Because I wanted to vary the edges, I used broken lines to indicate “softer” edges and the furry texture of the moth’s body, and then added some stronger lines to accentuate parts of the moth’s form.

Painting the Luna moth (Time Stamp 51:05)

This section has a lot going on, but the most important takeaway is that working slowly and in layers is helpful when you need to control watercolor.

I hope you enjoyed the preview/replay. Below are some extras for supporting subscribers. Also, I’ve been posting nature journal activities on Notes since April 1, and will continue through April 22 in celebration of Earth Day 2025.
