Thank you , , and many others for tuning into my live video!
Hi, friends!
This week we learned to trust our eyes when making adjustments to our drawings in pursuit of realism, practiced mixing, and also played with a Pentel brush pen. It felt like a holiday to me! How about you?
We’re going to spend the next two months practicing this skill so that you feel confident when you pick up your pencil to draw anything you see.
In next week’s livestream, we’ll draw and paint the Barred Owl (Strix varia). A preview of the reference we’ll use is below in the paid supporter section. It looks complicated, but trust me you have the skills to draw and paint this — I’ll take you through the process and I’ll put some fun warm up exercises in the our special chat. (When I saw this I instantly thought watercolor bokeh background, so look for that in the chat soon!)
Until later…

Cricklewood Camp
Next week we start Cricklewood Camp, a paid supporter exclusive. It’s eight weeks of walks in Acadia National Park, the habitat of the birds we will be painting during the July/August Wonder-Filled Wednesday livestreams. I have some extra livestreams just for paid supporters, and we’ll spend time creating an illustrated map (July) and a field guide (August).
I’m using the Park as an example. You can either follow along using my references OR you can use the activities as a model and create your own map and field guide of an area you’d like to explore. If you do go that route, make your choice this week.
If you’d like “to camp” with us, consider becoming a paid supporter. Subscriptions fund all the activities here in the ‘Wood (for free and paid subscribers) as well as the development of new features like Camp and the exclusive Straight From The Easel chat, where I not only answer questions, but also bring you real world examples of problems and solutions I encounter as I paint my collection. So far we’ve covered topics such as working with wet washes on a tilted surface, using a dip pen and ink, and customizing colors to get a good match to the reference.
If you yearn to draw and paint, love nature, like applied learning and practice using real subjects, then Cricklewood Nature Journal is for you!
Wonder-Filled Wednesday
Every Wednesday at 1:30pm Eastern US time (Time Converter), we marvel in our nature journals together — draw along with me or just watch, ask questions, etc. Livestreams are hosted on Substack for everyone, and recorded/archived for paid subscribers.
